CHIN ENLARGEMENT

Enlarging the chin (profile plastic surgery)
Chin enlargement is far more common than chin reduction. Here too, planning the chin correction takes the entire profile of the face into consideration. Chin enlargement is usually combined with nose correction (rhinoplasty). Chin enlargement can be carried out by means of an implant made of silicon, Porex or Goretex, which are available pre-formed in varying sizes. These implants can either be inserted through an enoral incision (in the mouth) with no externally visible scar, or through an incision under the chin. As a rule we prefer enoral access, as this produces no externally visible scar and the chin implant can be precisely placed and fixed to the bone using a mini screw.
A further tried and trusted method of chin enlargement is by bringing the frontal section of the chin bone forward. To do so, the front part of the chin bone is separated off, moved forwards and this piece of bone is then held in its new position with a small metal plate and screws. Both of these methods allow the chin to be precisely enlarged and the profile significantly improved. Here too, a computer simulation can be used in the preoperative stage in order to realistically demonstrate the expected results to the patient.
This type of simulation helps the patient to be prepared for their new profile, on the one hand, whilst on the other hand enabling them to better identify themselves with their new profile in the postoperative stage. In addition, it is invaluable in consultations between the patient and the surgeon and helps avoid any misunderstandings.
