Dermabrasion is the high-speed abrasion of the superficial layers of skin using a fine-grained grinding tool. Local anaesthetic is necessary.

Indication

1.    smoothing and improving areas of skin above all on the upper and lower lips
2.    removing warts caused by age (senile keratoderma)
3.    correcting scars and smoothing the skin of acne scars

The upper layer of skin is removed by abrasion, taking care not to damage the dermis. Regeneration of the surface skin leaves this smoother and more even. Strict criteria must be applied to the indication of dermabrasion as it is not suitable for all patients.

In dark or olive skin there is a risk of an alteration in pigmentation (hyper- or hypopigmentation), which is very difficult to correct. Healing can be disrupted or delayed and an infection in the wound cannot be ruled out. For these reasons intensive and critical consultation must be carried out with the patient and a strict indication of dermabrasion is vital.
